EDGE on TALENT 2010 | Volunteer in Africa

EDGE on Talent 2010

“EDGE on Talent” was an entertaining and successful event held in Knysna at Woodmill Lane on Tuesday 25th May, hosted by Ennis McAvera and Sarah Desjardins - two representatives from the non governmental volunteer organization, ‘EDGE of AFRICA’.
Ennis and Sarah are students from the University of Chester, England, who have come to South Africa to offer their support for EDGE of AFRICA and their projects, as they are totally reliant on the good will and hard work of their team members and volunteers, with their ethos toencourage ethical business by promoting sustainable development through responsible eco-tourism.

The aim of the event was to heighten understanding and raise awareness for the organization’s community/conservation/educational projects and initiatives, giving the opportunity for people to learn about the extraordinary work that takes place within the town and townships, to offer the chance of being involved with this inspirational cause, as well as offering an enjoyable day out for those who rarely have the chance to be part of exciting events. As a result “EDGE on Talent” was organized by the two volunteers.

With over 60 participants, EDGE on Talent was EDGE of AFRICA’s first ever talent contest, giving schools, which included Sunridge and Magdeleentjie, as well as youth centers in the Kayalethu township such as MAD about ART and Sinethemba, the opportunity to showcase their talents. Each and every act ranging from 4-20 years of age, including opera singers, traditional Kwaito dancers, poets, HIV /Aids awareness drama performances and many, many more did not fail to attract and impress the many passers by during the entire showcase. An enthusiastic and incredibly supportive crowd cheered, danced, laughed and even cried throughout these many inspiring and touching acts. The atmosphere was incredible! Every contestant was a winner, receiving a certificate; with first place going to two young gospel singers from Percy Mdala, “Boys of Faith”, whose performance moved many.

Throughout the day EDGE on Talent also offered a number of free activities to keep the children entertained. Cup cake decorating, face painting and games went down a treat, with even adults joining in with the fun.

EDGE of AFRICA are incredibly grateful for the support and contributions that were made from the local businesses who made the most generous donations and really made a difference; one of the prize winners quoted that he “had only ever seen things like this happen on TV”, this would not have been possible without their support, and the help of the many dedicated volunteers.
